My kids think tacos are the greatest food invention ever! I would have to agree that I enjoy a good taco here and there but my love for tacos is beginning to fade. I think it is probably because my children request them on a weekly basis! Last time I made chili for dinner, one of my boys had an idea. He thought that chili could be so much better if it tasted like a taco. Now, I am not looking to transform all of my recipes to taste like tacos, but I thought he was on to something with this idea. I asked him what he thought should go into a taco chili and we came up with this. We hope you like it!

Tacos meet chili in this quick and easy dinner recipe. We used black beans since they reminded me of refried beans that are often a part of a taco meal. Black beans are high in fibre and protein and are even a source of iron and calcium. Cumin is a spice that originated in Egypt and supports blood sugar regulation, aid digestion and is a source of magnesium and iron. This recipe uses the slow cooker but you can easily simmer it in a pot for about an hour and get a similar flavour.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground meat turkey, chicken or beef
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 2 cans black beans drained & rinsed
  • 1 large jar salsa you pick the spiciness
  • 1 can stewed tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Instructions

  • Saute onion in frying pan. Next cook ground meat through in frying pan. Add in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute. Now put meat mixture into crock pot. Add in black beans, salsa, chili powder, cumin and sea salt. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours. Top chili with guacamole, diced tomatoes and cheese. You can even use this to fill taco shells. Enjoy!
