Yesterday was my birthday! It was a wonderful day! I spent the morning sipping tea with a good friend, cuddled with my boys on the couch during a rain storm while watching a movie, went out for dinner and had a bon fire. All in all, it was a pretty fantastic day! For my birthday dessert, I requested brownies. It is a tradition in our family that my mom makes us our birthday dinner. My mom is pretty fantastic! This year we celebrated a little early and I requested brownies, whipped cream and fresh berries as my dessert of choice. It was goooood! I thought I would share it with you. Apparently the recipe was Audrey Hepburn’s! I figure if they were good enough for Audrey, they are good enough for me. The story goes that the recipe was originally shared in a gossip column about 25 years ago. If only gossip were always this sweet, the world would be a happier place! The recipe has been shared on many different sites – just try googling it!

I did ask that the brownies be made gluten free and they turned out great! I may continue to play with the recipe like I often do – reduce the sugar, add in ground flax, swap the butter for coconut oil, etc. But for now, I’ll give you the recipe – straight up!

  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2 oz unsweetened chocolate dark
  • 1 cup raw sugar
  • 2 eggs free range
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup flour gluten free
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt
  • 1 cup raw nuts pecans or walnuts


  • Preheat the oven to 325 F. Line an 8"x 8" square pan with parchment paper, leaving enough paper over the edge to use as handles. Melt the butter & chocolate over a double boiler on low heat. Once melted, remove from heat. Whisk in sugar, followed by eggs & vanilla. Next, gently fold in the gluten-free flour, salt & chopped nuts. Pour batter into pan. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Allow brownies to cool completely if you want them to cut into nice squares. If you try to cut while still warm, they may crumble. For me, it is a risk that I am totally willing to take!
